The standard way of thinking about marriage has it that it should remain monogamous and it's a sacred bond between two people. But focusing on the Na and Nimba, and in short, the Cannelas, traditionally, have a different view on love, marriage, and romance. Furthermore, let's explore the economic problems, marriage practices, love, and romantic play of both villages and how it contrasts.
The economic problem both the Na and the Nimba are trying to solve is the preservation of the land and traditions with strong lineages. Upon marriages, they inherit the land, and they have to do their best not to have it partitioned and maintain harvest. The Nimba society is geographically located in Northwest Nepal. Therefore, the women are married into a multiple brother household, and she is expected to treat them all equal and to produce children to continue their lineage. The men are in charge of the land and harvest, whereas the Na society of Southwest China has almost an opposite approach to marriage. They are all descendants of women, and the women are in charge of the land and creating and passing down the lineage. None the less, they don't concede in marriage even through the cultural revolution and the government saying they need monogamy, they still don't conform. At the age of 13 in the Na community, the women are of age to have sexual relations with men through consent. The men will visit her at home without the others knowing who also live there. The men can visit the girl in her room when it is dark and must leave before dawn.
