Maus and We wear the masks
Throughout history, humans have encountered adversity and challenges in large or small ways. The Holocaust is one of the most horrible cases of persecution and oppression in the history of the world. Two pieces of literature that explore the tribulations and triumphs of the Holocaust are Maus by Art Spiegelman and We Wear The Mask by Pual Laurence Dunbar. Maus is a sad depressing story. It describes the holocaust and how bad it was. We Wear The Mask is saddening and depressing. This demonstrates how Maus portrays the theme because it says that Valdek and Anja stayed strong throughout the Holocaust. We Wear The Mask portrays this theme because it is a sad but strong poem. For example, in stanza 1, line 4 states, “With torn and bleeding hearts we smile”. That means that the story has multiple repeated lines. Lastly, Maus and We Wear the Mask expresses a depressing tone in similar and different ways such as they both have sadness, but Maus, as well, expresses the tone of someone who died and We Wear the Mask expresses the tone “With sad and broken hearts, we stand strong”. In the end, these two texts effectively convey a powerful message about the hardships and pain that the Jewish people faced throughout the Holocaust and their tenacity to prevail against the opposing forces.
