Maya Angelou philosophy and teachings are timeless. There is a lesson to be learned in her more than 30 published works and her lessons taught as a professor and lecturer. More important she lived what she preached. She had a strong belief in humanity as a whole, in the human spirit and in the African American community. Being a civil rights activist, social activist, and role model for women makes Maya Angelou a historical figure who has made a huge impact in American society and in American history. Born poor and black, she was a childhood victim of rape, shamed into silence. She was a young single mother who had to work at strip clubs for a living.
Caged Bird Slavery left several African Americans traumatized. It showed how people were before and after. Paul Laurence Dunbar and Maya Angelou’s poems both express the way people who are oppressed by inequality, discrimination, and unjust laws through the central idea of the caged bird.
Maya Angelou was a strong African-American women who made an influential impact on the Civil Rights Movement, in bother her actions, and her literature. In Dickinson’s poem, “I heard a Fly buzz – when I died –,” Dickinson looks into the physical procedure of dying and how it affects not just herself, but others as well. When Dickinson was dying on her deathbed, she describes the fly as a figure of the theme death itself, as the wings of the fly basically cuts off the speaker of the poem. For Whitman, he has experienced death in the time of the Civil War.
Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou were African Americans alive during the period in American history when minority groups were fighting hard for their rights and respect among the country. These two authors used their writing skill to shed light on how African Americans felt throughout this period of time, opening many people’s eyes to how the oppressed truly felt. The civil rights movement could have had an entirely different outcome if it weren’t outspoken individuals such as these two. In Hughes’s well known poem “I, Too,” Hughes talks about how the people that mistreat him will soon regret everything they’ve done and will realize the true potential of him and everyone like him.

Segregation and discrimination towards blacks was increasing. Two famous authors were Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Langston Hughes wrote the poem “I, Too, Sing America.”
During her lifetime, Emily Dickinson wrote approximately 1800 poems but she only published ten of them (Franklin 1). It wasn’t until after her death that her sister discovered her work and sought out to publish them (Franklin 2). From there, Dickinson’s poems were accessible for the public to read and because of the sheer number of them, it’s unsurprising that she is one of the most recognizable poets within the Western world. Her poems were written as lyrics, as if they were meant to be sung as a lullaby, and she followed a common metre to ensure that they were read as they were sung along to. They were never particularly long and were always written in first-person.
Perhaps the most mysterious aspect of Emily Dickinson is the message which her poems convey. Dickinson is an artist with words: she has the capability to display her philosophy using metaphors and allusions throughout her poems. Despite never marrying, Dickinson held strong views about marriage. She saw marriage as a barrier, that marriage often ended parts of womanhood for the bride.
