The poems I chose seem to both be in a dark, dull, cold setting. One being the cold winter evening and the second in the dark and cold cellar. Reading the two poems shows that both poems are similar, but vary in details, being one talking about the winter evening and the other talking about the cool cellar and how lifeless it seems down there. After carefully reading the poems and examining what they have in common, I have found several things that I feel are similar in both.
At face value, these poems tell quite comparable stories. Both of the poems have related themes and symbols, tones that are close yet disparate, and similar structures yet differing use of language.

Both stories have the same author’s style, setting and animals as characters, and a human and animal connection. Both of the poems have sound devices. For example, in “A Blessing” the author repeats the word “they” several times at the beginning of each line, “they ripple tensely, they can hardly contain their happiness” and “they bow shyly as wet swans.

Both the poems gave African Americans a little bit of hope that one day they will be allowed to be around whites and looked at as the same.
