Throughout time, great tyrants and leaders have craved power. But why did they want this power? Is this power for themselves? Their People. Or for a whole different reason. We see characters taking power for the good of their people in Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies. We see characters take power for themselves in Animal Farm and 1984. Sometimes we see power given, not because a character wants it but because they deserve it or for another reason like in Beowulf and Lord of the Flies. The characters in these stories all had power and desired it in their own ways. Some used their power for good, while others used it for evil. They all did things to deserve it though. The main part of the quote that shows this is when it says ‘The banners and posters with which the square was decorated were all wrong!’ Which shows they didn’t even question it and were all in on war against Eastasia. Another quote from the story of Big Brother and The Party changing things is when Winston was speaking with Syme on the topic of newspeak. Syme said to Winston “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.”(Orwell, 1984 68) This shows that the party changed the language to make sure there is no thought of revolution.
