In John Milton's poem "Paradise Lost," Satan is a very complex character that can be easily be compared and contrasted to other characters that represent the devil in other parts of literature, such as books and movies. The character of Satan is a very popular theme in modern culture. For example, Satan in the movie "Ghost Rider" is both similar and contrastive to Satan in "Paradise Lost."

In "Paradise Lost," Milton's characterization of Satan makes him understandable and unforgettable, as well as easily comparable. This is because Milton introduction of Satan makes him relatively empathetic. He has just been thrown from heaven and is now in hell in a burning lake along with the other rebellious angels. The presentation of Satan makes him seem greater than he is in reality and manipulates the view of the readers to sympathize with Satan in the opening scenes of the poem. Satan does not, however, play as big of a role as in Milton's Poem. The devil simply appears to Johnny Blaze, who is the protagonist in "Ghost Rider." However, in this short scene, Ghost Rider's Satan is still able to portray himself as manipulative by tricking Johnny into making a deal with him. Although he pretends to be kind and understanding making Johnny unaware of his true intentions and leaves before he could figure out his identity and realize just who he made a deal with. Satan tries to connect with Johnny by showing remorse for his father and pity for his situation and is almost kind. However, his motives are later revealed and it is shown that he did indeed manipulate Johnny in order to achieve his goals and get what he wants. In another scene, the devil appears to Johnny again.
