Three Points, Two Stories, One Meaning In the short stories “Selling Manure” by Bonnie Jo Campbell and “Mugged” by Jim Crockett, both writers sense purpose, comfort, and fulfillment whilst selling manure and also grasping a coffee mug. Two entirely different stories with some of the same characteristics a good story needs. While selling manure definitely isn’t the best job Campbell knows with this job there is purpose behind it. Hours of hard, dedicated work pays off in the end. In my own experience, after a long day of work I feel purpose. Inside, I know I didn’t waste the day away, but instead was productive, efficient, and dedicated to my work. For Crockett he feels purpose when grasping his mug. In a sense he needs his mug and his mug needs him. I feel this same connection with my iPhone. If I don’t have my phone in my hand or near me somewhere I become worried that I have lost it. My phone gives me purpose; it lets me know when someone else is contacting me, whether it’s a text, Facebook. Twitter, etc. My phone tells me and I am able to respond in a timely fashion. As Campbell performs her job she feels fulfillment knowing she is giving her customers what they want. When I worked hard at the grocery store I always felt fulfillment. The days were long, and sometimes hard work; I definitely felt a tiring fulfillment once I was able to lie down in bed after a long day. In the mean time, Crockett has a sense of fulfillment sipping, holding, and washing his coffee mug. Whiling holding and scrolling through my iPhone, I read so much information at a time.
