Part II of the historical fiction novel In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez focuses on the Mirabal sisters as they grow up. Dedé brings us back to a volleyball game with Lio and Jaimito. One day, when Dedé is reading her mother the newspaper, she accidentally reads too much and her mother learns Lio is a communist and he is no longer allowed in their house. Because of this, when Jaimito and Dedé go on dates, they pick up Lio on their way. One night, Jaimito proposes to Dedé in her father's car and are surprised to find Lio hiding in the back seat.
In the Time of the Butterflies is a book about 4 sisters, Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and María Teresa. The book is about the three girls growing up and their experiences during the time of the underground movement to overthrow Trujillo. The book was written in memory of Dedé’s 3 sisters who had been ambushed and murdered, which we are aware of since the beginning of the novel. The beginning chapter of the book is describing Dedé as she waits for a woman who is going to interview her about her three sisters, she then goes into a flashback she has of her family talking at the dinner table and her father mentions someone named Trujillo, which then gives a hint at who this book might be formed around. Through the book, we read stories about times in the girls’ lives when they were going to school at Inmaculada Concepcion and being at home and falling in love, as well as there run ins with Trujillo himself.

Because of this, their lives became very dangerous as the government wanted to stop them from achieving their goal. They faced many hardships along the way, from spending time in jail to having government officials drive them around the city. Through the use of perspective, imagery, and point of view, Julia Alvarez proves that individuals may need to give everything they have in order to make a change they believe in. Determination and dedication is always hard, especially when trying to or being a revolutionary. In In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez these sisters are facing many challenges and bumps while trying to do what is right. While all the sisters are revolutionaries there is always a struggle, not only for the girls but Trujillo too. All the things the girls try to or do to Trujillo just to lose their life means barely anything a couple months later after they die because Trujillo dies too. In the Time of the Butterflies is a historical fiction of the narratives of four sisters who defied the typical gender roles of women in the Dominican Republic. On November 25, 1960, three sisters, known as Las Marisopas or the butterflies, were brutally murdered by Trujillo’s people, after the discovery of their plan to overthrow Trujillo’s regime. They became l symbols for empowering women, not just in the small village they were born in, Ojo de Agua, but the whole world. In 1999, the United Nation General Assembly designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. By fictionalizing the lives of the sisters, author Julia Alvarez makes the sisters both human and heroic.

Although they were in different ghettos, Krystyna Chiger and Pavel Friedmann were still forced into the ghetto and endured a lot of pain and suffering. In 1942, the Nazis forced the Jews into a place called the ghetto, which is where everyone was cleared, and then they forced the Jews in. First of all, Krystyna and Pavel were both Jews.
Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies is a work of historical fiction set in the Dominican Republic that focuses on the four Mirabal sisters who bond together to rebel against the corrupt leader of their country, Rafael Trujillo. The four Mirabal sisters, Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and María Teresa form closer relationships with each other as they figure out a way to bring down the tyranny of Rafael Trujillo. Although they have a mutual goal, each of the Mirabal sisters has different feelings and thoughts throughout this time period. The theme of coming-of-age and identify is best exemplified through the character of María Teresa, known as Mate, through the ways she matures throughout the novel and becomes her own person who stands up for what she believes in.
Minerva Mirabal was the leader and the voice of the butterflies before their murders on November 25, 1960. Minerva was the leader of the group because of her extroverted attitude and her disgustion of oppression. Minerva consistently portrayed the image of the butterfly to the public despite the struggles she had going on in her personal life. From a young age, Minerva’s identity is rooted in her struggle against oppression. Throughout her life, she transforms her identity into a national symbol.
They both got out, but in different ways. These two are similar in many ways. First, both were living in a ghetto, although they didn’t chose to do so. The Nazis forced them to live in the cramped houses. Second, Both Pavel and Kristen “escaped” but in totally different ways.
Childhood is something extremely important in the development of people, and whether their adolescence is good or bad, it often shapes their futures and personalities. The book In The Time Of The Butterflies by Julia Alverez demonstrates this while simultaneously bringing readers into the world of young revolutionary women. Alvarez tells the story of four young women who live in the Dominican Republic and start seeing the world in a new light as they mature from sheltered individuals who speak to barely anyone outside of their family and neighbors, to school girls learning about corruption in the outside world; Minerva, the oldest of the sisters, was the first to start the descent into rebellion. The butterfly takes place in the Ghetto. In the Butterfly it says, “I’ved be in this place for seven weeks in this panned Ghetto”. In the Krystyna's story it says, “Daddy found out that there would be a liquidation of the Ghetto”. The main enemy in the Stories are the Nazis. In the butterfly, Pavl dies and the people killing Jews in WW2 were the Nazis.
Lastly, both the stories end in a bad way. In The Pearl they decide to put the pearl back where they found it because they did not think that having the pearl was worth as much trouble as it had caused them throughout the story. In The Far Side the butterfly ends up getting stuck in a spiders web, and by using personal reference we can inform that the spider will come back to its web and eventually end up eating the butterfly, it was only a matter of time. In The Pearl they thought that the pearl would bring them happiness but it actually only brought them more trouble. In The Far Side the butterfly thought that it would be free once it got out of the cocoon, but what really ended up happening is that the butterfly would eventually get eaten by the spider.
