The author’s name is Leon Leyson. Leyson was born in Narewka, Poland. He was a survivor of the Holocaust. He had 3 brothers and 1 sister. His mother stayed home to take care of the family and his dad was a machinist. This book was written to honor the memory of his family and of the millions of other victims of the Holocaust as well as share how Oskar Schindler saved the lives of his and many other Jews.
Leon lived in Narewka until he was 8 years old. His dad then moved their family to Krakow, Poland where his job had moved him and where they would have a better life. They were just settling in when in 1939, just a year after the family moved, the Nazis invaded Krakow and immediately began stripping Jews of rights. His dad came back, but Hershel stayed. His dad named Moshe got a job and worked for a man named Oscar Schindler. At the end of 1940, Leon’s family was moved into a ghetto in Krakow. David started to work for Schindler so he, Moshe, and Pesza were all allowed to leave the ghetto. People were allowed to leave the ghetto if they had to work outside of the ghetto, but otherwise everyone had to stay inside the ghetto. In June of 194 his brother named Tsalig was taken away from the family because he didn’t have a work permit. The family, in groups, then got moved to a labor camp called Plaszow. Here the guards were awful and would beat the people for no reason. A while after the family had been on camp, Schindler convinced the Nazi officials that it would be more efficient if the workers were right next to Emalia instead of wasting time by walking the 2 and a half miles to the factory every day when they could be working during that time. Leon’s father and David moved there in the spring of 1944. There was a list formed, called Schindlers List, that listed names on who was moving to the sub camp and Leon’s name was on it
