In the beginning of the book, Phillip Malloy was passionate to make it into Harrison school’s track team. He thought that being only good at running would automatically make him into the team, but his grades interfered with his chance at the team. He didn’t make it into the track team because he detested Miss. Narwin’s class and felt the book, The Call of the Wild was useless, so he put the most unnecessary response to an answer of his exam.
Doodle was right behind his brother all of the way so his brothers pride caused him to run faster and away from Doodle to try to push him to see if he could catch to up him. Doodle’s brother was far ahead of him now so he slowed down he began to hear Doodle call out to him saying,“Brother stop help me!” but his pride would not let him turn around and help his brother. When Doodle’s brother made it to the house he started to wait on his brother but he could no longer hear him calling so he ran back to go find him and he found him against a tree dead because his heart had burst.

Charles whipped Buck as he struggled being the lead dog. Charles was headed to Dawson with six of his dogs, his wife, and his brother-in-law. They stopped as they saw a man. All the dogs fell to their back in tiredness and starvation. the man introduced himself to them as John Thornton.
All of a sudden everyone was lining up, it looked as though the competition was going to begin. The dogs were lined up and a judge called out the rules. Then suddenly there was a loud bang and dogs took off in every direction. Left and right, this way and that way. Into the forest and through the fields.
Buck gets into a fight with the mean, lead sled dog named Spitz, and ends up killing him, "Mercy was a thing reserved for gentler climes. He maneuvered for the final rush… Only Spitz quivered and bristled as he staggered back and forth, snarling with horrible menace, as though to frighten off impending death. Then Buck sprang in and out; but while he was in, shoulder had at last squarely met shoulder. The dark circle became a dot on the moon-flooded snow as Spitz disappeared from view" (London 34).
The suddenness and violence of his capture further emphasize the loss and trauma he experiences. As Buck adapts to his new life as a sled dog, he also experiences the loss of his identity as a domesticated pet. He learns to tap into his primal instincts and becomes more like a wild animal than a domesticated one. This loss of identity is exemplified in Chapter 3, where Buck fights fiercely with the other sled dogs: "He was sounding the deeps of his nature, and of the parts of his nature that were deeper than he, going back into the womb of Time. He was mastered by the sheer surging of life, the tidal wave of being, the perfect joy of each separate muscle, joint, and sinew in that it was everything that was not death, that it was aglow and rampant, expressing itself in movement, flying exultantly under the stars and over the face of dead matter that did not move" (London
As the sled stopped buck fell to the ground powerless. He felt as of he were floating and if he weren't alive anymore. And when the time came to get back up, Buck watched every dog crawl to their feet with multiple attempts. But Buck just laid there with the power of thinking enough was enough and he didn't move. Hal was beating him with the club so Buck could get up but still he didn't move, he just laid there feeling less; he could no more feel the pain from the strikes of the club and he was in his power to give up.

Buck is a dog from Santa Clara Valley, a dog who lived in a huge house. He was the king of the property and was petted, fed well and treated like a loved and cherished dog. Buck was living a pampered life, where he had everything he want until the day where he was stolen, sold, and brought to an unknown environment. Buck has went through a change where he had to adapt quickly for survival. A place where he had to steal to eat, defend himself in order to survive.
Mark Twain believes that dogs are superior to man because out of all animals, man is the only one that is cruel enough to inflict pain on others just for the pleasure of doing it. Twain’s short story “A Dog’s Tale”, written in 1903, displays these beliefs and is done so from a dog’s point of view. This unusual take on the story is used to help convey the theme that one shouldn’t assume the others will do the same for them. The story includes literary elements such as characterisation, structural irony and a plot and conflict. It is a story of a loyal and heroic dog which unfortunately ends in an ironic twist of fate.
