The argument made by the author Robert Sklar in his book Movie-Made America has to do with the impact that American movies have had on the country's culture and society as a whole. Movies and films are now one of the most common type of entertainment. It gives people a grand selection of genre such as comedy, horror, romantic, fantasy, animation, etc. However there are also limitations such as Rated-R movies. Rated-R movies preferred to as “restricted motion pictures” are rating given for frequent strong language and violence, nudity for sexual purposes, and drug abuse. No one under 17 admitted without an accompanying parent or guardian.
Even though some movies are R-rated, people still sneak into the movie theatres. This begs the question, is the movie rating system outdated? The movie rating system was set in place so that people would know if the movie was “inappropriate” for children or not, though with the introduction of the internet most kids are already exposed to “inappropriate” things, like murders and sexual content, and standards have been lowered on what “inappropriate” is considered. The movie rating system should be updated and at least allow kids 15 or older into R-rated movies.
Therefore, when a film is not up to par with the rest of the industry, it can have a lasting effect on an individual. The audience leaves the theater after the movie, wishing that someone had warned them about the poor production, just so they could have saved their money for something more worthwhile.
