Compare and Contrast Essay by Krista I am writing my essay on two rather surprising short stories entitled "The Interlopers" by Saki and "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. In "The Interlopers”, the characters, Gradwitz and Znaeymare, are enemies in the midst of a family feud. The characters in "the Story of an Hour" are a fairly young couple Mr. and Mrs. Mallard. These stories are surprising and depressing and have a lot in common. My first story, “The Interlopers” by Saki is about two men Gradwitz and Znaeymare whose families have been feuding their entire lives. On the night that this story takes place the two men are in the forest with their woodsman hunting each other. Gradwitz’s family is the owner of the forest, but Znaeymare’s family covets the land and poaches on it (that is the cause of the feud). The two men meet alone and would have shot each other if it weren't for their civil upbringing. This is a story about Mrs. Mallard and her husband. As Ms. Chopin sets the opening scene Mrs. Mallard’s sister is trying to break the news of Mr. Mallard’s death in a train crash. Because Mrs. Mallard suffers from heart failure, her sister had to break the news very gently. Upon hearing the news, Mrs. Mallard wept bitterly, then locked herself in her room. She sat by her open window and breathed deeply of the fresh air when suddenly, she felt a sudden sense freedom. Her life was now hers and hers alone to do with what she wished. She walked back down the stairs where her sister and her husband’s friend waited. They all turned at the sound of the front door opening. Who should walk in but Mr. Mallard, who was no where near the train wreck and did not even know about its occurring. Mrs. Mallard died of a heart attack from seeing her supposedly dead
