Modern classics are defined as recently released movies following a basic theme that has withstood the test of time. One example of these common themes is two people falling in love after first pretending to be in love. Two examples of modern classic films with this theme is The Hunger Games and The Proposal. Both of these popular movies are built on this theme that love is not always at first sight and sometimes acting the part is enough to show you that what you are looking for is right in front of you. The Hunger Games was released in 2012 and stars Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta), and Liam Hemsworth (Gale). The main story line is centered on Katniss having an on screen romance with Peeta in order to survive the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is the name given to the yearly forced survival competition for 18 unlucky contestants. The object of the game is to be the last man or woman living at the end and to kill everyone else. The reason for the on screen romance comes into play because the people at home watching can send gifts to the competitors. The Hunger Games has a lot of special effects because it is a sci-fi film. The biggest and most precise effect is when Katniss is shooting the arrow into the apple of the pig’s mouth during her tryout. However, critics like David Edelstein seemed to think that “the film is all shaky close-ups, so you rarely have a chance to take in the space, and the editing is so fast.” Other critics like Roger Ebert state that “’The Hunger Games’ is an effective entertainment, and Jennifer Lawrence is strong and convincing in the central role.” Surprisingly, The Proposal had a total of 350 shots with special effects.
