In 1803, Thomas Jefferson wrote a document to France to purchase western land, also known a the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson was given the land from France, and wanted to study the new purchased territory. He sent out his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, he had much knowledge about the frontier. Lewis asked for help from William Clark, he also was a draftsman and frontiersman and had more knowledge than Meriwether. Both of the men made a plan to take a two-year trip to the ocean.
Henry Wiencek in “Thomas Jefferson Slave Master” continues to talk about how Jefferson’s actions do not add up to his slavery clause. In 1794 Jefferson opened a nail factory, which was ran by slaves. He employed a dozen boys around the ages ten to sixteen years old. Jefferson’s reasoning for this is that two months of those slaves work pay a year’s worth of groceries. In 1811 Jefferson started another business, a textile factory.

Bayard says that he can question Mr. Jefferson’s genuine actions. He believes that if Jefferson were to be voted in that the sustainability of the country would come into question, “There would be really cause to fear that the government would not survive the course of moral and political experiments to which it would be subjected to in the hands of Mr. Jefferson.” (80) So he questions whether Jefferson would be harmful or helpful to society. Jefferson’s Ambition for Agrarian Republic Thomas Jefferson’s presidency was filled with his desire to introduce and establish agrarian republicanism to America. A society that produces and maintains its economy by the means of agriculture. Since this was his true belief, it was certain his vision would run into a few conflicts. These conflicts include but are not limited to the threat that slavery would be abolished, the short span of time Jefferson had to achieve his goal, and the opposing desires of his citizens to industrialize America.

Everyone has their own opinion on government, but I have sided with Thomas Jefferson on this discussion on his claim that the government keeps the people safe. I will also add onto his claim by stating that the government is in place just to protect the rights that we possess. Also to make sure that the citizens don't abuse the rights and privileges they are given. Let's say that government didn't exist, and there was a forest. Well you have two different farmers wanting to take the forest for themselves.
Overall, Thomas Jefferson would be the best choice if he ran for the presidency today when compared to Andrew Jackson. This choice is based singularly on fact, not opinion. Jefferson was more qualified to deal with economic issues considering he consistently paid off national debt so it did not accumulate. Also, while Andrew Jackson was more coordinated and qualified when it came to matters of national defense, it only contributed to his lack of gracefulness when dealing with the economy. Lastly, Jefferson would be much more eligible for office when considering issues of racial controversy since he made more of a stride to equality for all races than Andrew Jackson.

Jefferson wanted to abolish slavery but when freed they had to be removed from society since slaves took up most of Virginia’s population. In order to have a “disappearance” of an entirely black population Jefferson deported the future generation by shipping infants to Haiti. Jefferson believed deportation was the best solution because blacks and whites couldn’t coexist in America because of the nature of our color and intelligence. Blacks were “inferior” and were not capable of Christian virtue and salvation (Takaki 65).
