Goffen Sacred and Profane Love “Titian’s Secred and Profane Love and Marriage” is a section of a book by Rona Goffen that is about Titian’s depiction of women and how he treats them in his artwork. Art Historians believed that his artwork was nothing but 16th century pinup models. However Goffen believed that his figures had much more meaning behind them, than being sexual objects for the eyes. Yet in Leo Steinberg’s article he discusses that this final painting by Michelangelo was a misnomer that he basically finished because he was so tired of the church. There were so many questionable concepts in this paintings, and on one realized it till years later after its completion. This artwork was basically a play on itself and is a reverse of everything the painting was supposed to be about. In order to find evidence, Steinberg would look at old historian’s work, and even look for himself what the meaning of the characters was. He listed out problems with the painting, which makes it easy to follow what he asked, and what Steinberg was also thinking. While he focuses a lot on Christ’s interpretation, there are many figures around the fresco that share a problem such as the Virgin, and even the idea of Heaven and Hell. Michelangelo also added himself into the painting being a sacrifice to demons, because he was probably suffering from all this work he had to do for the church.
