The most dangerous game was written by Richard Connell in 1924. It is a short story which has mystery, suspense and adventure. Also, it shows how people do their best to survive in different situations. This story consists of two main characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The story begins on a yacht in the Caribbean Sea.
Panic, anxiety, and most importantly, fear, are all components that form the adventurous tale, The Most Dangerous Game. Rainsford, the protagonist of the story, is widely recognized as an experienced hunter who ventures off in a ship to travel to Rio in order to hunt jaguars. However, the story turns when Rainsford falls off his ship, encounters a hunter who hunts men, and becomes the prey himself. Although Connell sets up an intense plot by using irony, characterization, word choice, and other literary devices, imagery is one of the main aspects that releases an uneasy feeling within the audience. Imagery is a common literary device that authors use to engage a reader into the story, by painting the scene in the audience’s mind.
The fear of death is maybe the world’s greatest fear. In the film, High Noon, and the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” both characters show a sign of fear in the main conflict. Both stories share some similarities, but they have differences too. One similarity is the characteristics in the protagonists. Both show courage and determination when having to face the problems.
In the short story, “The most Dangerous game” by Richard Connell. A well-known hunter by the name of Rainsford fell out of his boat and swam to a nearby island. As he was on the island, he found a mansion; a man named General Zaroff a very exceptional hunter owned the mansion. The General invited him into his home and told him all about his hunts along with how he is now bored of hunting animals. Zaroff later reveled to Rainsford how he hunts humans, because he thought it was more challenging.
First, second and third place is at the top of the totem pole when it comes to competing. Sometimes second place is considered the first loser. While this mentality motivates some, it can tear others down. The difference between the people who give up and the people that keep trying is how they deal with adversity. There are many stories on how people cannot overcome their problems; however, there are even more of those who can.
We may not always choose to be put in tough situations, but they are inevitable and there is no option but to try to solve the conflict, and in this case, escape death. Not only was rainsford in a conflict with General Zaroff he is in conflict with himself as he is finding his way to Ship Trap Island. “‘I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve,’ he said through tight teeth” (12). Rainsford also had a conflict with himself on the island when he was deciding what to do to get away from Zaroff. Rainsford was able to overcome the internal conflict when the dogs were chasing him and he needed to make the decision to jump into the water, fight the dogs, or climb a tree and hide. Man versus himself is very important to Connell’s story.
Another difference is that while Rainsford and the girl are hiding they come across a crocodile. Nevertheless, at the end of the story Rainsford kills on of Zaroff’s servants and stabs Zaroff who eventually

The quote can literally mean a hunter and his prey, but it can also mean a bully and his victim or the rich and the poor.
Hunters believe animals are not capable of reasoning and they see them as something lesser than humans. Throughout time, these positions can change. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
He had to fight himself to stay on track. He was so scared in the jungle while the General was trying to hunt him. On page 186, it says “He could not say where he was. That was suicide.” This shows the reader that Rainsford may be thinking of what could go wrong, and is not thinking on the positive side of things.
