Stories have the power to shape one's identity. This is demonstrated in Thomas King and his mother’s story, “Two Wolves”, and “Fishers story” by Isaac Murdoch. These stories all shape identities. Stories are a part of everyday life. They are a part of everything and teach us everything. Not only did the story of Thomas King’s mother, Katheryn Konsonlas King, shape his identity by showing him to push through everything and play the field carefully but impactfully; it also shaped my identity as I will continue to remember all the women before me who had to fight so hard to go so far. I feel like we tend to get up in our worlds and forget about those who had to fight so hard to gain the freedom we now take for granted. The “good” and the “bad” that you fight everyday. One wolf - the bad - holds anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. Emotions that make us human but also make us fear emotions. Then there's the “good” wolf who gives joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. Emotions that we wish to feel. Which wolf is going to win the battle? The story goes that it is the one you feed. Those who struggle with their mental health know how hard it is to not feed the bad wolf, it’s so easy, so tempting and easier than siding with the good wolf. The story of “Two Wolves” shapes how you think and your mentality. The bad wolf is always there, but you have the control not to feed it, let it starve. Feeding the good wolf can take time to learn how, how to do it. The impact of this story and how it shapes identities is so important.
