The overall tone she uses towards the notion is somewhat disgust and contempt. She describes the matter as “there are worrying signs that battle to put gender and sexuality at the forefront of all teaching and learning is going too far.” The use of scare quotes throughout the piece suggest that the words should not be taken at face value. It is often used to suggest disbelief or actual disagreement with the words as they are being used, as if the words don’t actually exist. Examples comprise “cisgenderism”, “heterosexism”, “transgender” and “gender dysphoria”, all of which are genuine words in the oxford dictionary.
Masculinity is a trait that men possess but some women do as well. The NFL sees its players as gladiators and tough guys which is why the Linemen on opposing teams battle in what is called the “trenches” to stick that stigma of toughness. It’s almost like the League is saying you have to be a man’s man to play in the NFL which pays dividends in the stature and size of players in which are drafted and praised. Breaking down the NFL through masculinity with an objective paradigm is a
Others oppose it entirely as an invasion of privacy. • Pangender/omnigender/polygender: A person whose gender identity is comprised of all or many genders. • Pansexual/omnisexual/polysexual: A person who is sexually attracted to all or many genders or gender expressions. • Passing: Being taken for a member of the dominant group — white, straight, and cisgender (nontransgender). For example, LGBTQ people who have the ability to pass can choose to conceal the stigma associated with being a member of a sexual
For this week’s blog I decided to read Pharr’s work on “Homophobia As a Weapon of Sexism.” I believe Pharr wrote this piece explaining the relationship that ties homophobia and sexism together, while discussing how homophobia is a direct result of society that is led by men. Ultimately, a patriarchy which sees homosexual behavior as nonconformance and a threat to masculinity and superiority. I think that homophobia is an effective weapon of sexism because it is empowered and fueled by a relative term, heterosexism. Heterosexism is the discrimination or prejudice against homosexuals on the assumption that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation.
There are many approaches within psychology that study the influence of sex differences in human behaviours such as, behavioural, cognitive and biological approaches. There are many factors within each approach that contribute and influence the development of sex differences in human behaviours. Within biological psychology, there are many factors that combine to influence the difference between the sexes, such as genetics and hormones and brain structure and function. Research methods used by biological psychologists to investigate these differences involve methods such as animal and case studies, drug therapy, twin studies and scans (MRI, PET, CAT). Although there are many different approaches to studying sex differences, within each approach,
On Race, Gender and Class: A Homophobia Perspective Homophobia, patriarchy and racism are interrelated. Homophobia results from patriarchy and racism to a large extent. Heterosexism is a common practice while homosexuality is labeled as subordinate, evil and awful. Consequently, homophobia pervades groups of people. The system of power and privilege, compulsory heterosexuality, White supremacy patriarchy and the fundamental transformation of American society also lead to homophobia.
David Buss carried out the study, as well as wrote the research article, The Evolution of Human Intersexual Competition: Tactics of Mate Attraction. This study focused on testing four different hypotheses about human intrasexual competition tactics: first, patterns of intrasexual competition are influenced by mate selection preferences. This is based on the idea that the opposite sex has mate selection preferences for the tactics that have evolutionarily been selected for. Second, men will attempt to attract women through displaying their material sources. This is based on the idea that females find resources to be of great reproductive value, so males show the resources that they have to offer.
American football demonstrates a hegemonic masculinity and the media tends to assert that idea. In a greater scale, the media associates sports with men due to its aggressive nature. Women who try to change that perception tend to receive negative media depiction or none. In fact, there

“It’s Not You, It’s Me” There are many sexual orientations: heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexual, etc. However, there is one orientation that is almost invisible. Asexuality. In the United State alone, there are over three million people (1%) who are identified as asexual. Asexual is defined by the LGBT center of UNC as “a term used to describe individuals who do not experience sexual attraction toward any gender.”
Due to all the factors that football forces you to be a part of such as the media, classmates, coaches, parents, and fans force you to be in a constant mindset focused on getting better. Whether it’s in school, playing football and even talking to girls you often catch yourself trying to better yourself through confidence which shows by your actions how masculine you are or try to portray to be. From the things I wore to the things I did in public it was all to portray an image of a leader and a role-model to other people, or at least that's what I thought, being a masculine individual was. We walked around as if we were the most popular whether we were or not that’s what we believed. It often made me feel as if I was unstoppable, untouchable, and unbeatable due to the social class that football made me accustomed
Being queer is a state of mind. It is a term characterized by accepting and embracing that which is unique. It means opposing everything that is deemed normal. It is about imagining that everyone in the society has the right to be themselves and offer their views freely without being judged or hate which is the opposite of what is normal. Being queer means thinking beyond binaries like monogamous or non-monogamous, male or female because you believe that every individual has more than two sides.
People make a big deal out of gender nonconformity, in which I believe is because we fear what we do not understand. “What we don’t understand, we fear. What we fear, we judge as evil. What we judge as evil, we attempt to control. And what we cannot control…we attack.”
The United States has made great progress in achieving social justice in regards to sexual diversity within society; however, multiple barriers continue to exist for educators and students alike. The main barrier is that sexuality is a topic often avoided or constrained within educational policy due in part by conservative discourse. Dewey (1927) believed that “…the public has no hands except those of individual human beings” (pp. 82). Therefore, he believed it is the wayward, elected individuals who act upon their own interests on behalf of the state who are the ones who create acts where progress ebbs and flows.
What’sWrongWithBisexuality? Nothing. I could just end my post here, but you know I like to argue. And many people need me to argue about that subject, either because you also want them to be more accepted or because there are still many things you need to know before judging them.
