Comparing When School Was Scary And The Ballad Of Birmingham

The article “When School Was Scary” and the poem “The Ballad of Birmingham” share a common action of being treated with racism. Both texts are different because the Little Rock Nine in “When School Was Scary” was a group of black students that were constantly bullied. The little girl from “The Ballad of Birmingham” wanted to walk the streets all by herself when a bomb was set off at her church and killed multiple black children including her.

In the article “When School Was Scary”, the author shows the reader that black kids shouldn’t have to be worried to go to school because of being bullied just because of their skin color. “ In addition to angry mob, Arkansas National Guard troops were at Central High on the first day of school.” This isn’t right because Elizabeth should be able to go to a good educated white school to learn even though she is a black child. This shows racism because there were guards standing in front of the school blocking black children from coming in to learn. The Little Rock Nine had to have bodyguards stay and walk around with them so they wouldn’t have any harm done to them by the white children. White students at the school still didn’t accept the black children who attended their classes. This shows …show more content…

“No baby no, you may not go, for I hear those guns will fire, but you may go to church instead and sing in the children's choir.” This show’s racism because the little girl's mother doesn’t want her to go out in the streets because she might get shot since she is black. “She clawed through the bits of glass and brick, then lifted out a shoe. “Oh here’s the shoe my baby wore, but baby where are you?” This shows racism because someone white has bombed a church that some black children were in. This proves how much some white people hated black
