Brother. A Story Of Grief, Hope And Resilience
In the book Brother, you will come to see that hope is a large theme because it is what carries the characters and everyone through grief. The book my essay will be on is called Brother. It is written by David Chariandy and was published in 2017. In the novel Brother, there is lots of prejudice and hard times and all odds are stacked against this family; however the characters show hope and resilience to get through the hard times. To begin, a strong action of resilience shown in the book was when Aisha threw the rock at a police car because she was tired of them patrolling and questioning the neighborhood for no reason. A moment of hope is when Francis and Jelly go to the music audition and think of their dreams and what will happen if they win it. To illustrate this, we found a quote from the book saying “A major hip-hop concert at the CNE was just days away. Big names and acts were coming from the cities that mattered… At the promotional events leading up to the concert, there’d be talent scouts and … record deals might be on offer. As shown in the paragraph, there are extreme examples of hope and resilience that you can clearly see without thinking about it. The quote added in is the biggest example of hope.
A major part of the book is the racism and prejudice that this family has faced in their own community. To begin, there are many moments in the book where there are clear examples of racism and prejudice and there are too many to write about. To illustrate my point, a key moment of intense racism is when the family is kicked out of the mall by 2 workers who use slurs and start to physically attack them.
