Unbroken is a biography about World War II veteran Louis Zamperini, who was a former olympic track runner who survived a plane crash in the pacific ocean. Spent up to 47 days drifting in the ocean. However that wasn’t even close to how long he spent as a prisoner of war in three Japanese camps. Louis had an interesting , and suspenseful life, but he managed to survive which is the surprising part of it all. This book gave us an insight into Louis Zamperini’s life about how belief is the most powerful, if not essential part of growing and overcoming crisis.
Leon kept moving on if that meant seeing his mother safe the next day; vice versa. Also, everyday once Leon and his mother worked came home, they set time aside to pray for their family, even if that meant taking away time from rest and such. The memoir "All but My Life", tells of Gerda’s life story as she suffered under Nazi rule. The theme of the work tells how sustaining hope is crucial to survival and is shown when Gerda believed her life would never change in the beginning, when she found hope from her family in the middle, and how she survived through hope online when she had nothing left during the death march. Hope is one of the main reasons Gerda survived, and the evidence is shown throughout the story. Gerda already showed her aspirations and beliefs at the beginning of the story.

In the novel True Grit by Charles Portis, the characters Rooster Cogburn, Frank and Mattie Ross are portrayed as having the presence or the lack of grit. This book mainly describes Mattie Ross’ story in her own words. Frank Ross, Mattie’s father is killed in cold blood at the beginning of the book by a man named Tom Chaney, who then stole from the man’s dead body and ran away like a coward.
One of these examples is, after he is kicked out of school he still continues to learn from books in the library. This shows that he will not give up on his education. Furthermore, when William is building his windmill people in the village think he is crazy, and they mock him constantly. But he does not let that stop him, he just uses it as fuel to keep going.
