Optimism During Tough Times Optimism does not come naturally. Many in present times have a hard time finding that bit of hope to grab onto. In the drama The Diary of Anne Frank, the reader can sense they find optimism even through the holocaust and the adversities the characters face. The authors Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett use optimism in the characters to help develop a theme surrounding the drama. These characters show the reader how to find optimism during tough times. From the beginning of the drama (Act 1, scene 2, line 139) Mr. Frank elucidates about Anne having to wear overshoes. “You said you'd rather die than wear overshoes? But in the end you had to wear them? Well now, you see, for as long as we are here you will never have to wear overshoes!” In this quote Mr. Frank helps Anne to see the bright side of living in the annex.
