Survival in the wilderness can be very challenging mentally and physically. Jess Cooper is the heroine in the book I am Still Alive by Kate Alice Marshall. Throughout the story , we can see how Jess’s mindset and thoughts drive her behavior and willingness to survive . She initially believes she is doomed and will not survive out in the wilderness. Jess has accepted her fate. Jess then transitions her thinking to how will I survive when she starts finding materials to help her survive like wood for a shelter and some food. Jess begins to wonder if she can survive after all. Jess then moves her mindset to I will survive when she finds a second cabin out in the woods with food and weapons. Jess starts to think about using the wood to build a shelter, food to fuel her and the canoe to go fishing to sustain herself . Jess also finds a backpack full of spare clothes that survived the fire and her pill bottle with a few pills left. Jess now realizing she could survive ignites that will to survive inside of her as she formulates her plan to survive. Jess now feels motivated and hopeful which makes her begin to chop wood and branches to build a shelter. Evidence of her mindset shift is obvious by the following quote “ I grin at the lake, I think it's going to be okay” Marshall page 40.. Jess changes in the face of a choice to learn new survival skills and tap into the skills she already had , such as learning how to build a fire, shelter and how to find food and water in the wild. Jess remembers she is good at archery and can use this skill to hunt and kill animals. The will to survive can make us overcome even our greatest anxieties and fears . For example Jess overcomes her feelings of sadness at the thought of killing animals and eventually she becomes emotionless and realizes she has to kill these animals to survive. We can see this change in mindset in the novel when Jess encounters a fox who keeps stealing her supplies. She initially lets it go as she cannot dare think of hurting it , but as it becomes progressively intrusive , she plans to kill it in order to benefit her survival plan. Jess has made the decision that she wants to live, this is supported by her saying “I decide again, as I will everyday, sometimes once and sometimes a dozen times, that I want to live ''-Marshall 107.
