In the plot there is a black detective that is estranged from his mother and has a brother that is a criminal that also has a side kick that he works with. In “On The Subway,” Sharon Olds depicts an affluent white narrator’s initial description of the blatant differences between her and a poor black boy seated on the opposite side of the subway car. The narrator’s external observation then shifts into an introspection of the subtle similarities shared between the two individuals despite their socioeconomic differences. Through juxtapositioning the physical differences between the narrator and the boy, allusions and comparisons of the boy to slavery, Olds asserts that white individuals achieve false superiority through their racist act of discrimination and oppression of the not-so-different African Americans. Old’s repeated allusions to slavery and racism demonstrates that even in modern day,
According to the documentary “Terrible Transformation” and the textbook, foundation of slavery was based on race. When Benny started to learn trade, his teacher or his classmates liked him and they got along; however, as soon as they realized that he is “nigger” suddenly they refused to be friends with him (P.151). This event precisely shows the prejudice against Black people was deeply rooted in the minds of white people whether American or European. After discovering a person has a Black ancestry no matter how much they liked that person, the Black person should be excluded. Also, it shows white people saw their race as superior that comes with privilege, while Black as the inferior race was not subjected to those privileges.

What is the purpose of racism? In Theorizing Nationalism, Day and Thompson discuss how racism and nationalism are precisely the same. Racism has the ability to help build nationalism, especially in our young country. LeMay and Barkan in U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Laws & Issues talk about how this racism is used during a specific time period, 1880 to 1920, in the United States of America. Both of these articles argue that when the United States was in a time of peril, they used racism as a unifying factor to bring the country together and as a way to put a group of people lower than themselves to bring their status to a higher point in society.
Crash The movie Crash depicted the interactions between different races in the city of Los Angeles. Most of the characters were both a victim of and disseminator of racist ideals. Racism affects individuals and their relationship to the rest of their world. It makes people affected by racial injustice to not trust others’ intentions even if it is the right one. For example, when Baldwin was nine years old a white teacher took interest in him and offered to take him to see plays at the theater. The author states, “It was clear, during the brief interview in our living room, that my father was agreeing very much against his will and that he would have refused permission if he had dared.” Due to continuation of racism, Baldwin father grew to not trust people regardless of their good intention.
The cultural representation of people of color in film is a serious form of racism and prejudice within United States. White-washing, which speaking in terms of film, is casting practices where white actors are casted as historically non-white characters. Therefore, to explain the definition of white-washing as well as racism within the film industry, the following are statistics of the diversity gap in the Academy Awards throughout 87 years: 98% white producers, 98% white writers, 88% white actors. Best actress winners have been 99% white and 1% person of color, while best actor winners have been 92% white and 8% of color. If racism was non-existent in the film industry, why are there no winners within the last decade of Latino, Asian, or Native American Descent (Palmer)?
The practice of blaming victims has been around since power dynamics emerged in society. The treatment of police brutality victims, usually those who are people of color, and sexual assault victims are clear examples of victim blaming today. Questions like “what were you doing that provoked them?” , “what were you wearing?”, and “why didn’t you fight back?” take the blame from the attacker and place it onto the victim. This concept can easily be applied to horrific traumas from the past.

I believe "Weedflower" is a great story for children to analyze bullying and racism from another point of view. Today, students may perceive bullying and racism started not too long ago, or that it only happens to the "nerdy" kids at school. Bullying and racism is an ancient dilemma that has affected many people of different ages and cultures. Sumiko's story, although fictional, is based on real events of how the American Japanese were treated during and after the Pearl Harbor attack. It focuses on a teenager that suffered and struggled at the hands of many racist people.
