The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet Aristotle defined love as two bodies and one soul (Aristotle). In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, love is the essence of the whole play. Even though Shakespeare may have intended for Romeo and Juliet to be in love, they are actually infatuated. Romeo and Juliet were infatuated because they were lustful, selfish and fickle. Romeo and Juliet were infatuated because they were lustful. Their relationship was based on a strong sexual desire instead of love. At the beginning of the play, Romeo is morose because he is charmed by Rosaline but he knew that their relationship can never work out because of the long feud between their families. I’ll send my eyes to prison, and they’ll never be free to look at anything again. I’ll give my vile body back to the earth. I’ll never move again. My body and Romeo’s will lie together in one sad coffin. (III.ii.57-61)
Juliet is willing to die for someone she has not even known for a long time and does not even think about what her family and the people who love her will do if she dies. Also, she does not even know all the facts for sure about Romeo’s fight and if he really died but she still will lay with Romeo in a coffin.
Another reason why Romeo and Juliet were infatuated is because they were fickle. Their emotions and feelings quickly change and are very unpredictable. After the balcony scene, Romeo is confident he is in love with Juliet and that she also feels the same way towards him and so wants to take action. Romeo then goes to Friar Lawrence’s cell and asks the Friar if he will marry Juliet and him. Friar Lawrence disapproves of Romeo’s impulsive actions and scolds him about his fickleness saying
Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here! Is Rosaline, whom thou didst love so dear, So soon forsaken? Young men’s love then lies Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.
