Kelly Link’s “The Cinderella Games” is different from other fairy tales referenced in the story because “The Cinderella Game” has an untold story inside. Link presented the story as a fairytale but as the story went on she gave the story a dark and twisted message. Even though, “The Cinderella Games” has multiple references to classical fairytales, according to Bettelheim it is not considered a fairytale due to the fact that it is missing a fairytale ending and a sense of fantasy. In normal fairytales, there is just a princess and prince and they all live happily ever after together but that is not the case in this story.
Yeh-Shen’s father had two wives, each of them gave birth to baby girls. Yeh- Shen’s mother died and the stepmother had to watch after her and she hated Yeh-Shen because she was very beautiful and more kind than her own daughters so she mistreated her. She was given the worst jobs and the only friend she had was a fish, but the stepmother killed it and cooked it for dinner. Then an old wise man told her that she needed to go get the fish bones because they were wishes she could use so she did. She used her wishes to go to the festival and wore a beautiful gown of azure blue with a cloak of kingfisher feathers draped around her shoulders.
