Comparison Between Convergent Parallel Mixed Method Design

524 Words3 Pages

All three designs serve a useful purpose based on the type of research study being conducted. The research method that I would foresee as being beneficial regarding a study that I would conduct would be between the convergent parallel mixed method design and the exploratory sequential mixed methods design. Both designs would prove to be advantageous to a research study. The convergent parallel mixed method design utilizes a comparison between the methods for interpretation based on the same variables used in the collection process. If I were to use this method I would follow the side by side comparison versus a merger. The exploratory sequential mixed methods design would also be useful by collecting the qualitative data first thus establishing the narrative and using that to aid in the qualitative process.

This type of design allows the researcher to collect data using the qualitative and quantitative methods, which are noted in all mixed method approaches, but in a manner that validates the results thorough comparison, based on the same variables being used in both methods, (Creswell, 2014). The author did note that validity must be achieved independently prior to comparison. Utilizing the convergent parallel mixed method, the qualitative and quantitative data are collected and analyzed separately utilizing the same concept, thus parallel in application, (Creswell, 2014). The final results from each method are then compared regarding outcomes. The comparison should reveal the same results, thus establishing validity of the findings (Creswell, 2014). The challenges with this method are noted in the mixing process. The author, Creswell, (2014) has noted three ways of successfully comparing the data to include, side by side, merging through code changing and joint display using tables or
