Could you imagine living a normal life for years when all of a sudden you are being gassed and killed over what you believe in? In the graphic novel Maus 1 by Art Spigelman and in the poem “Often in a minute” by Madageline Stein we are shown and told in many different ways how this affected many lives and families, how people had to go through this for years. After reading Maus 1 by Art Spigelman and “Often in a minute” by Madageline Stein the nuanced themes were Death/grief and the holocaust; however, the different structure contributes to the theme because one is a graphic novel and one is a poem.
Themes in Maus I
To begin, in Maus 1 by art Spiegelman the nuanced themes were death/grief and Jewishness
In this graphic novel, we are shown these themes in different situations, for example, we see the theme of sadness and grief when we find out that art’s mom killed herself when he was young, and the comic book he makes about her death. We also see a lot of stories about the holocaust and how many people were affected including art’s dad Valdek who was a survivor of the Holocaust. We see how during his life Valdek served in the war and was a P.O.W., however when he wasn’t he and his family would hide, and while they lasted a good amount of time hiding they did get caught but

Additionally, this theme shows up a lot and is explained in little words which include the feeling and description of this. We also see fear and how all of this affects the Jews in a very serious way. How they couldn’t go a day without living in fear of being captured, sent away, and killed/ gassed. Madageline Stein shows this in more than one way by asking herself and us why they are being discriminated against over their religion. How the Germans are moving them as they please just to end up killing them and abusing them to the point where they lose their dignity. All this contributes to the theme of death and
