Someone once said, “You’re always one decision away from a totally different life.” American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang follows three different characters as they experience hate and growth. Firstly, the Monkey King, a monkey who tries to be more than a monkey; Jin, a boy who tries to be more American; and lastly, Danny, an American boy who tries to forget his culture. In this book, readers see how all these stories connect and the growth each character goes through. After both Jin and the Monkey King meet someone like them or understand them, they realize their wrongdoings and start changing.
In the book, “Asian American: Chinese and Japanese in the United States Since 1850” by Roger Daniels, he writes about the Asian American immigrating to the United States. Daniels writes on the Japanese Americans mainly focused in chapter five, six, and seven. Chapter five largely base on how the adaption of the Issei and Nisei in the United States. Chapter six in regards to the treatment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Chapter seven the continuation of the post war life of the Japanese Americans after World War II.
Throughout “Go West,” Peter Hessler explains the egotistical differences between people living in China and those living in America. For one, their curiosity lies in different places; in Hessler’s words, “Most Chinese were intensely curious about foreign life” (48). In his experience, people in China held many misconceptions about the quality of American life, so whenever they were presented with the opportunity to learn more, they took it. That being said, Hessler also comments, “many Chinese had impressed me as virtually uninterested in themselves or their communities” (53). In other words, the curiosity of the Chinese extends far enough to reach the other end of the globe, but it still maintains a decent distance from their own cities.

For over centuries, America was consider the land of freedom and opportunities and also know as an melting pot, due to the mixtures of ethnic cultures in America. This place that is name the place of freedom and land of opportunities is the same place where people were and continue to be discriminated against and have laws based around race. “The American melting pot? I was born and raised up in South Korea for twenty years, and thus I know Korean culture very well. I also understand American culture as well, because I lived and worked with Americans for four years. I decided to choose this topic, because in my experience, I have noticed a lots of differences between Korean culture and American culture; for example how Korean or American treat older people, how Korean or American act in the gym, and about the differences in foods. I picked those subjects because I have experienced the Koreans and Americans side well enough to understand both and I’m currently in South Korea with military men and women. I have Korean friends and American friends spending time together sometimes, and then I can observes differences and similarities.
There are different style in which American parents treat their children compared to Chinese parents. According to China Daily, American parents like to reward or praise their children. They believe glorification and encouragement can help the children to develop courage and self-confidence. Thus, they prefer compliments or encourage their children, no matter they do well or not. For example, if children do excellent in a test at school, their parents will praise their children by saying, “Good job!”
In American Born Chinese, there are many plot elements used to make readers feel multiple things. Three elements I will be talking about in this essay are parallel plots, foreshadowing, and conflict. I will give some examples from the story that show how the author used the three plot elements. I will also explain whether or not I think these plot elements were successfully used.
Chinese Immigrants Arriving to America Chinese Immigrants are one of the third largest immigrant groups in the U.S. They were the first large Asian group to settle in the U.S. and Canada. Chinese Immigrants were the first to suffer from racism but also nativism. The first Chinese Immigrants that came to America during the mid 19th century, mostly came from the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province part of southeastern China.
In the Story “Growing Up Asian in America” by Kesaya E. Noda, she discuss many of her life events that helped her become who she is today. Noda throughout the story struggles to find her true identity. She struggles to take her three identities, Japanese, Japanese-American, and Japanese-American- woman and make them all turn into one. A great example of Noda’s struggle to find out her identity in the Japanese culture would be, “My race is a line that stretches across the ocean and time to link me to the shrine where my grandmother was raised” (lines 44-45). This means that no matter where in the world she goes she will always be connected her family.
You may wonder where Singapore is located, well I have the answer. “Singapore is in the continent of Asia and covers 687 square kilometers of land and 10 square kilometers of water. These facts make Singapore the 196th largest nation in the world with a total area of 697 Square kilometers” (“Where Is Singapore”). The distance between Singapore and the United States is 15,299km or 9,506 miles (“Distance from Singapore…”). Description of Population “As of Tuesday, October 24, 2017, the current population of Singapore is 5,734,825.
There are many differentiates between America and China in diet, lifestyle. First of all, there are many differentiates in diet. American like eat fried foods such as: burgers, pizza, fries etc. Opposite, Chinese people like cooking. Different types of vegetables to cook together, while Americans like to eat raw vegetables, such as salad.
Second, the form they express their emotions and how they communicate with each other change based on their culture. The way they address the counterpart is different. While Asians are more formal using family names or titles when they talk to the other part, Americans are more informal since the use first names looking to be more friendly (Ready and Tesseman, 2009). Another difference is the form they develop the negotiations changes. For example, Asians are not that not linear, that means they may combine the negotiation with type of events, while Americans are linear, they want to focus on one aspect ate the time, so they do not have events (Ready and Tessema, 2009).
Children’s lives have quickly shifted onto the Internet in the twenty-first century. Even the President of the United States has nearly forty thousand Twitter and Instagram posts. Social networks are websites that allow users to interact over the Internet. There are 600 million Facebook users across the globe (Rosenwald 2). 300 million visit Twitter every month (Maney 3).
