Thomas More’s work Utopia has been the main reference when examining a utopian society. This novel was written in 1561 and since that date has been translated into numerous languages, allowing others the privilege of embracing his ideals. The novel is a work of fiction that centers on an island society. More uses this island society to create his idea of a perfect society including the people’s way of life, their customs, relationships, values and work ethics. With this famous novel I will be examining Ernest Callenbach’s work Ecotopia and ultimately comparing and contrasting each authors utopian ideals. Then, with the abundance of information gathered and with the multiple ideas of what essentially makes a utopian society in these two authors opinions, I will depict a ‘good society’ in my own personal opinion. …show more content…
The commonalities were focused on communal living, the concept of siesta and access to good healthcare. Communal living seems to play a huge part of More’s idea of a perfect society. More did not focus necessarily on the communal living situation at home, but instead on the communal living on the island in general. When it came to agriculture, the entire society participated; everyone did an equal amount of work and therefore benefited from the goods equally. “Agriculture is the one occupation at which everyone works, men and women alike, with no exceptions (More & Logan, 2011, p.44).” The people of the island put the community first rather than themselves as individuals.
