Belly dance and the Waltz are two very different types of dance. The origin of the name Belly dance came from the French term “danse du ventre” which means dance of the stomach. It includes complex moves of the torso. Although it came from French terms, it’s an ancient Egyptian dance that originated in India over 5,000 years ago and spread through the Middle East. Some believe it’s a religious dance that was performed during fertility rituals and has to do with celebrating childbirth. Since there is little evidence to support that, others don’t think it had anything to do with childbirth and that it came from ancient Egyptian social dances. The Waltz is a ballroom or folk dance usually performed in three parts, primarily performed in closed position. Waltz comes from the German word "waltzen," which means "to turn." It evolved from folk dances in Austria and Germany in the mid 1700’s. The Waltz actually started from peasants. The noblemen became bored of what they had been dancing and started to follow the peasants lead. As time went on, the Waltz went from wider, aggressive steps to more elegant steps. It was very popular in Vienna in the early 1800’s then spread to the rest of Europe. The waltz is done with a partner. You are suppose to mentally visualize a box. Your feet will stop at the corner points on the box and move along the edges and diagonally across the center. Then, count in threes as you go. In the Waltz, space is used a lot more than it is in Belly dancing because you are drawing a square with your feet and possibly, even some turns.
