In Ayn Rand's story Anthem, the protagonist Equality 7-2521 has a power unlike no other within their collectivist society. One day when Equality was working as a street sweeper, he finds an old abandoned underground railroad tunnel from the Unmentionable Times long ago. This is where he conducts his experiments that fill him with pride and joy. Equality dreams how his new invention that he brought into existence can change the world, but helping mankind is not his true motivation behind his passion to create. Throughout the story, Equality's true motivation is him trying to find his inner self and his identity as an individual.
In time Equality has become more intelligent while being down there. He has performed experiments and he made a great discovery, light. Equality wanted to do something with the light he made. In addition, he also found a girl, Liberty 5-3000, she is from the Home of Peasants. The girl and he have fallen in love with each other.
She also notices him. As they continuously meet in the fields, she eventually names him the Unconquered. Equality soon discovers a tunnel and begins to secretly explore it even though this action is forbidden. While exploring the tunnel Equality discovers electricity, which is un herd of in his society. Equality decides to experiment with the technology and constructs a glass box that emits light.
As a result this quote exemplifies the fact that Equality 7-2521 is burgeoning as a person, and starting to show his humanity and how he would have come about if not coerced by this despotic society. This aforementioned desire to defend and protect the place even at the cost of his own life is a major transmutation from the beginning of the story where he was willing to ask for forgiveness contrasted to now where he would rather die. Moreover, Equality 7-2521 developed even further after his discovery of the tunnel. Soon afterward Equality’s discovery of the tunnel, he magnified his already knowledgeable mind additionally and committed more and more transgressions as time progressed “We are defying the will of our councils. We alone, of the thousands who walk this earth, we alone in this hour are doing a work which has no purpose save that we wish to do

He believes that by biting the hand that fed him, they ended up in the tunnel, penning this letter. Proceeding into the Novel, Equality 7-2521 was viewed as someone with a burning curiosity, so he was sent to the Home of the Sweet Sweepers and that’s when they made a groundbreaking discovery, they saw “iron rings as steps leading down a shaft into a darkness without a bottom.” We shall go down,” said the character International 4-8818.”
Equality suffers greatly from his cause. Equality’s cause is to be able to create an invention that will appease the council of scholars, and further the knowledge of the society. He also wants to use this as forgiveness for his sins. However despite Equality’s best intentions, he is persecuted for his individuality. “A street sweeper!
He decides that his new name is will be Prometheus. Prometheus is a Greek god that brought fire to citizens but, it was against the god’s wishes and was punished as a result. Equality worked to create electricity and attempted to bring it to the council of scholars in hopes of one day becoming a scholar. But, they present his invention and as a result Equality flees the city to the Uncharted forest where he finds a home. There he discovers books and wants to better educate himself the moment he discovers the word “I”.
In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality lives in a world where individuality is a sin. He finds himself smarter, taller, and stronger than his brothers. As he’s exploring one day, he finds a tunnel where he discovers something new. Deciding whether to show the Scholars his discovery or not is a difficult decision Equality makes in the book. If the Scholars don't approve of his invention, he could be punished for the crime he committed.
In Anthem, Equality discovers electricity and finds that this power is good and he wishes to share it with his fellow brothers in the hopes that he may be able to help his people. Ayn Rand expresses the importance of this as she states multiple ways Equality can spread his newfound creation: Then we thought of the meaning of that which lay before us. We can light our tunnel, and the City, and all of the Cities of the world with nothing save metal and wires. We can give our brothers a new light cleaner and brighter than any they have ever known. The power of the sky can be made to do men’s bidding.
One night he discovers an opening in the ground left from the ancient times of which he is forbidden to speak, “when men knew the secrets we have lost.” Equality begins to sneak away from his daily tasks to sit and think, and it is in this opening that he discovers the great secret of electricity. Equality decides to show the “box of glass” he has created to the World Council of Scholars, but when he presents this new Innovation to the scholars, they scold him, their ignorance and strictness. He flees to the dense woods that surround the city, accompanied by his glass box and by Liberty 5-3000. In the forest, Liberty and Equality come upon a house from the Unspeakable Times?
In response to the choice of Street Sweeper, Equality thinks, “We knew we had been guilty, but now we had a way to atone for it” (26).
