What is a dystopian society? This is a society that is characterized by oppression, misery, and the illusion of a perfect society. Why do so many people like movies that are a dystopian society? What makes it so entertaining? Is it there connection to their own lives? It might be that they feel their lives are controlled and don't have any freedom. Two stories that demonstrate a dystopian society are “Anthem” by Ayn Rand and “The Maze Runner” by Wes Ball. These two stories may seem like two different styles but once you see past the idea they are very alike. In this movie a group of people get stuck in a forest type place that is surrounded by a maze and people called runners run through the maze during the day to map out “The Maze.” In the movie “The Maze Runner” Newt states, “You can ask the people who put us in here, if you ever meet the bastards. Listen the truth is... The Runners are the only ones who really know what's out there. They are the strongest and the fastest of us all. And it's a good thing, too... But in The Maze Runner they are just sent up from a box to live there with only knowing their names. These statements reveal that they both have misery because one big part in everyone's life is their family, sadly these young teens and children are sent off to survive without parents and siblings. Another item that is similar in both stories is that they don't know there towns back-story. Such as in Anthem they don't know very much about the unmentionable times, as for The Maze Runner they don't know anything about their life before the maze. One last thing is that I found that they are all assigned jobs or vocations. Furthermore, in Anthem their jobs are assigned at about fifteen and then in The Maze Runner the jobs are assigned after the leaders see they ability that you
