The book Of Mice and Men begins with the two protagonists stopping by a pool. George is described as slender and tan. Lennie is descried as big and strong. George and Lennie are traveling to work in the barley fields. They left their old ranch because Lennie, who has some disability, had touched a young woman’s dress on account it looked soft. Consequently, the alarmed girl screamed, then told police she’d been raped. Lennie has trouble remembering where they are going so George reminds him. George notices Lennie has a dead mouse and takes it from him. Lennie wants the mouse because it is soft. Lennie is so strong he accidentally kills the mice he pets. Then, George and Lennie make a fire then George puts beans out to cook. Lennie wants ketchup with his beans but George does not have any. George becomes upset with Lennie and laments about how much better his life would be without him. Lennie offers to leave George and live in a cave. Lennie tells him to stay. George and Lennie discuss their dream of owning their own ranch with rabbits,chickens and other animals. The two men eat their beans and while they eat George tells Lennie to hide at this spot if anything goes wrong at the new job. George and Lennie sleep by the pool. Chapter two begins with George and Lennie getting settled in the ranch bunkhouse. An old man shows them their beds and gives them information about the different ranch-workers. The boss comes in and interrogates George and Lennie. Lennie forgets his promise and says four words. The boss is suspicious of George for watching out for Lennie because usually it’s every man for himself. In order to get rid of some suspicion George tells the boss that Lennie is his cousin.
