Trace Adams Mrs. McLellan English II 20 March 2023 Author John Steinbeck the Author for “Of Mice of Men” describes different themes throughout his novel. Two themes that stuck out the most were Loneliness and violence. Loneliness stood out to me the most because it was shown through many characters throughout the novel, but violence was also shown and stood out to me. 2 characters that show loneliness in this in “Of Mice of Men '' are Crooks and Lennie; I’ll also be explaining how Lennie demonstrates violence in the novel. Throughout the novel “ Of Mice of Men '' Steinbeck shows loneliness through Lennie. Lennie worked in the fields throughout the majority of his life. He has no family and no friends besides George. George is more of Lennie’s care-taker than friend. When Lennie gets bored he often likes to pet, touch, feel soft things. Doing this causes him to do bad things without any intentions. Lennie's habit of touching soft things ruins his friendship with George, but ultimately gets himself killed. Lennie had nobody but George to talk to. At the new ranch George makes friends with a few of the ranch workers, every weekend they spend their earnings. This leaves Lennie at the ranch with nobody. (Chapter 1) Lennie is a big, kind, dumb fella that loves feeling soft things. Multiple times in the book Lennie did bad things not knowing what he did wrong. His problem was not being able to control his strength; when his aunt was alive she would buy him pet mice, not a single mouse lasted over a few days due to him petting them excessively hard.
