Puritans were a group of English Protestants of the late 16th hundreds who followed a much stricter moral code than that which prevails in time . Anne Bradstreet of “ Upon the Burning of Our House ” and Jonathan Edwards of “ Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God ” are both puritans . They both wrote about persuading people to get right with God , in different perspectives . Throughout both , poem and sermon they used eternal life , having a relationship with God , human moral weakness , and religious belief . Bradstreet exemplifies the Puritans relation with God as an intimate connection ; this evident throughout the entire poem . In comparison , in Edward’s sermon he affirm on page 111 , “ When you shall be in this slate of suffering the glorious inhabitants shall go forth look on the actual spectacle that they may see what the wrath and fierceness of almighty ” . Puritans , need God to guide them through life . They strongly believe that God direct all things by his will and worshiping him will help them not only succeed in having a great life , but lead them to heaven in the afterlife . When it came to making a mistake in life towards God , Bradstreet and Edwards did not appropriately agree with each other . As stated in Bradstreet’s poem , “And did thy wealth on earth abide ? Didst fix thy hope on mould’ring dust ?” . She is questioning God on his decisions for her , not considering the harm she has done until later on in her poem .
