Thesis: Starvation, child labor, and abuse of power (social issues that also existed in the 1800’s and Oliver Twist) have remained issues to this day in some parts of the world.
Starvation has become a problem faced by people in mainly third-world countries, but it is still present. Today, more children are starving than adults. In fact, “children are the most visible victims of nutritional deficiencies” (Elver, H: 2015) and about 5 million children are dying each year because of poor nutrition (Elever, H: 2015). When children are hungry, it hurts them later on in life as well (UNICEF Works to Give Kids a Healthy Start, UNICEF). However, children aren’t the only people that are starving. A major fraction of the world, 1 billion people, suffer from chronic hunger and almost 2 billion are either undernourished or over nourished (Elver, H: 2015). This means that our world is still as starving as much as it was in the 1800’s, and that is not an improvement in our society. …show more content…

Around 215 million children work against their will today, many of which work full time (World Day against Child Labor, n.d). Since they work such long hours, many of the children do not receive proper nutrition, care, or play time, are denied an education, and suffer horrendous forms of forced labor (World Day against Child Labor, n.d.). The worst countries for child labor are almost all third world countries, so the children work for very little or no pay, which does not enhance their families dire income either (The 10 Worst Countries for Child Labor, Hunt K. 2013).
