The Need for a College Education

High school graduates today have to make the decision to go to college or stay home and possibly look into joining the workforce. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics as of 2016, 5.2% of Americans who currently hold only a high school diploma are unemployed and make on average $36,000 annually, while only 2.7% of Americans who hold a Bachelor's Degree are unemployed and make on average $60,000. Only 1.6% of Americans who hold a Doctoral Degree are unemployed and on average make $70,000 and up. Considering these statistics-- and despite the fact that college can be costly-- it appears that is is most definitely worth the while. Currently 65.95% of Americans choose to go on to college to get some sort of degree(Carnevale, 1). More than previous generations, high school graduates face overwhelming career uncertainties. Tuition for a four year private college has more than doubled in the last 30 years. In 1988 a four year private college on average costed around $15,000. Now, in 2018, a private four year college costs around $34,700 (Martin). I believe this is the key factor that causes millions of high school graduates to go directly into the workforce because they cannot afford another level of education. This is especially true for third-world countries where people there realize an education is a way out of poverty. In this country, people living above the poverty level may not see this critical need as clearly, yet education still remains vitally important. Learning how to learn is a critical skill that will give lifelong benefits. With a higher education come many benefits such as: higher paying jobs, less chance of unemployment, shorter periods of unemployment, better chances of promotion, health benefits, job security, satisfaction in the job and more options when changing careers. In fact, the more education a person has, the less likely that person will need to switch careers in the first place. However, should one wish to change, having further education gives more options. Going to college is basically a down payment for future success.
