Although there’s been an uprise in mental health awareness, no one knows the power it holds on the human body. I’ve had many days where I’ve felt alone and it’s impeded my ability to learn, but many have had worse. Those who have schizophrenia struggle to function daily, even though there might not be anything physically wrong. On the other hand, it can also positively affect your performance. Whenever I’m in a good mindset, my mood is boosted and I get more work done. The brain is a compelling organ that holds more power than we give credit for. Survivor Type by Stephen King and “Deep Survival” by Laurence Gonzales explore how mental state can be the deciding factor in who lives and dies. As the story moves forward, Richard Pine’s diary entries begin to include gory details of his findings. “I got my other hand on its miserable neck and broke it. The sound gave me great satisfaction.” He writes this relatively early in the story. He’s already gone insane, but this action is not extremely descriptive. As he loses his mind more and more, the descriptions he gives become more and more intense. “Several times I've come close to ripping the shirt bandage off the stump and scratching at it, digging my fingers into the soft raw flesh, pulling out the rough stitches, letting the blood gout onto the sand, anything, anything, to be rid of that maddening horrible itch.” At this point he’s been on the island for about 1 month and yet he’s already amputated. Richard Pine goes in depth about his flesh, using words like soft, raw, and maddening. This shows that his mental state has deteriorated significantly because he’s not thinking about his actions. When Juliane separates from the rest of the survivors, she isn’t discouraged, but instead thinks logically. “She had no survival equipment, no tools, no compass or map—none of the things I’d been taught to use in survival school. But she very deliberately set up a program for herself.” She doesn’t seem distraught or in any way affected by her mother’s disappearance because her mind is in survival mode. Unlike the other survivors who are going to go insane awaiting rescue, Juliane is taking matters into her own hands. ‘Before he died, he spoke to his father on the phone: “Why did I listen to them—I shouldn’t have.”’ This employee was in a panicked state. When he tried to escape, he was hushed away. He has regrets because of his mind, worrying if it was safe outside the building. This doubt kept him from living and this doubt killed those who followed a similar fate. Juliane, on the other hand, did not let her troubles get in the way of
