The compromise of 1850 was very complicated. First, it came after the Mexican war. This followed the acquisition of territory in the western united states. Later, in
1850 a man named Henry Clay offered a proposal to unit the divided states. Clay then turned the proposal to Stephan Douglas a senator from Illinois. Douglas came up with a bill that included five key points that will take place. Stephan Douglas led the fight, and help settle slavery in
Southern united states. The first was to include California as a free state. The next was New 1

The supreme court ruled that blacks were not citizens therefor couldn’t sue in court. A man by the name of Roger Taney wrote this decision for the court. Taney also stated that blacks “had no rights which the white man was bound to respect” this meant that Taney thought less of blacks 7 even if they were considered free. Benjamin Robbins Curtis felt differently about this ruling he stated that free black were citizens and had rights as well. Before Scott won his case many people call it arguably the worst ruling in supreme court history. It is also noted that this entire lawsuit took ten years to settle. Compare that to today the ruling time would’ve been cut in half, or even less. Many blacks didn’t have the same rights as white during that time even if blacks were free. It is also important to note that the Missouri compromise was ruled unconstitutional.
