Can you remember a time when you and your parent argued? Was the tension between the two of you unbearable? Perhaps you were eventually able to look at the situation with a new point of view, or maybe you resembled a stubborn mule. Whatever may have happened between you and your parent, you’re not alone. Fighting with your parents is part of growing up, however, having a disconnected relationship with your parent usually isn’t. In the excerpts from Confetti Girl by Diana López and Tortilla Sun by Jennifer Cervantes, each narrator struggles with the relationship between themselves and their parent. He’s a teacher, so he expects a lot from her concerning her grades. Sometimes, that seems to be really all he cares about, and other times, he thinks of her as one of her students instead of family. To start off, in paragraph 3 the tension is displayed when Lina mentions a former problem between her and her single parent. The text says, “And I don’t want to talk to him because I’m still mad about the volleyball game…” The reader is not expected to know what the volleyball game problem was, but rather wonder about it. Additionally, the tension was also displayed in paragraph 28. It reads, “‘...a classic epic journey,’ he says as if he were in class with a bunch of students. I can’t stand it. I just can’t. I’d rather have Vanessa’s crazy mom.” This shows how her father treats her like a student or a colleague rather than his daughter. Imagine having your father act as if he were your teacher. In the story, Izzy’s mom gets a job requiring her to leave Izzy with the grandparents she hasn’t seen since she was six years old while her mother needs to go away all summer. This upsets Izzy to the point where she isolates herself from her mom, who was supposed to be spending the summer with her. Izzy clashes with her mother when she narrates, “I stormed off into my room and threw myself onto my bed. I ached inside. Like the feeling you get watching a lost balloon float far into the sky until it becomes an invisible nothing” (Cervantes, pgh. 35). Obviously, Izzy is upset by her mother’s decision creating tension in the situation. When Izzy runs into her room, it must create tension because she stormed away from her mother talking. Tension is illustrated when Izzy says, “I heard mom's footsteps coming towards my closed bedroom door. I held my breath, hoping she wouldn’t knock” (Cervantes, pgh. 39). Izzy hoping that her mom doesn’t open the door demonstrates how upset she is with her mother’s actions and shows the tension between the two.
