To Change or Not to Change? Rita Mae Brown once said, “The reward for conformity is everyone likes you but yourself” this shows if people change for conformity, they are losing their originality and he or she is a people pleaser instead of being themselves. People love to stick with the bandwagon of society. They want to a place to feel adored by everyone else. Most everyone feels the need to conform except the Leopard Man. He represents true non-conformity because he wants to be different from everyone else and he becomes true to himself. However, people are ignorant to follow a trend because they go with it without even thinking about it and they pressure others to follow them. I personally believe that people need to stick with their true selves and show to others that they can be independent without society’s permission. Again in “Angela’s Ashes” Frank’s father is a conformist to Irish society because he still values the everyday traditions of life of the Irish and he pressures his kids to follow his way of the Irish. However, Angela (the mother) does not believe in the old Irish society because she is more focused on her kid’s future and she can take whatever people will say about their social quota. Angela also wants her kids to thrive because she also believes too that they should travel to America for their better future. Also when Frank’s father left after Christmas, Angela was stuck with the kids for the rest of their life, since no one appreciates Malachy’s conforming attitude about Irish society. Frank stayed true to himself even though he was rejected for opportunities because of class distinction. He does not give in to society to change who he is because, he knew he can overcome the challenges that he can face. Frank also refuses to change himself to please the people in Ireland because he knows where is going in life. When Frank was grown up, he was all set to have a future in America, and Angela and her family is proud of Frank because he knows he is doing best for himself. Being mentally strong and emotionally strong can lead you to be independent in your life. You do not need to change yourself to other people just because of your appearance and class. People just look at the appearance without realizing their potential and it causes others to change or not to change themselves for them. Being yourself is the most key part and no one can replace you the way you
