You would think that individuality is the number one thing we must always seek after. But is it really? Conformity and individuality are both complete opposites, that doesn’t mean there is a good side to choose from. They both play a big part in our lives such as: decision making, teamwork, and creativity. So why not have both, it’s good to have conformity in one hand and individuality in the other, having these traits will keep us open minded and at bay with our peers. It’s conformity to say you have individuality, so we must take action and find the balance between our conformist and nonconformist selves. Why? Simply because more than one person wanted to finish their meal and pay their bill, that caused other people to observe and think that fire was not such a big deal and stayed. More than half of the people in the restaurant died. There was later a test that was made to see how long it would take people to react while danger was at hand, with ten people who were tolled to stay seated when smoked leaked out of the back door of the room and one other person who had no idea what was going on. After the smoke was able to be seen the test subject looked around the room to see if anyone noticed, but nobody budged so that person proceeded to write in their packet just like everyone else. In “Values and Norms of society”’, Shelly Shah implies, “ Social values are cultural standards that indicate the general good deemed desirable for organized social life.” It has gotten so bad that the conformists of this era are living off of welfare and just rely on the government to solve all their problems, but when a special individual tries to explain to them that they are practically slaves to society. People care too much about becoming part of the norm and fitting in with the trends and doing what others think is cool, just to be accepted into a group that has standards deep down in the dirt. If there is one thing to remember from this, it is a quote from Friedrich Ludwing Jahn that goes; “The secret of living in peace with all people lies in the art of understanding each one by his own individuality” so let’s leave our mark in this
