The relationship between Confucianism and Southern Baptist cannot be assessed without first acknowledging the divide in Eastern and Western cultures. Presently, both cultures are focused on creating solutions for battles on politics and religion within countries, but what differentiates the cultures are how they apportion and tackle those issues. Southern Baptist is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States with over sixteen million members. Interesting enough as Western culture has become more liberal the Southern Baptist denomination has remained a large force within the states. The denomination lies under the Protestant umbrella in Christianity. What makes Southern Baptist different from other Protestant denominations is how it has shaped regionally. Followers live by the Five Constants; which is a set of books and teachings by Confucius and the morals correspond to each book. I Ching (The Book of Changes) focuses on the interaction with others and yin and yang. The Classic of Poetry talks about justice and Book of Documents talks of government and social foundation. The Book of Rites talks of social responsibility and knowledge, and the Spring and Autumn Annals emphasizes integrity and self awareness. In contrast, Southern Baptists have values that vary on political views and the rights of women based on an individual church. Baptist churches are different from Confucianism because their places of worship are not funded directly by the government but instead founded by a group of believers and remains by the funding of the church established. No pastoral hierarchy exists with the exception that women cannot take on pastoral leadership. With this in mind, women have strict standards to follow in comparison to men who follow the religion. In terms of marriage, women must respect and submit to her husband in his demands. This is extremely dissimilar to the notion of society currently, even though with the growing popularity of feminism the church has been questioned for such customs, and many women still follow the religion regardless.
