It was clear that during Lincoln’s presidency, the American political system had failed. The South wanted to cede from the Union, and this was only one of the problems going on during this period of time. The division between the North and the South was extremely prominent; they were both passive enemies. The South wanted the right to own slaves and induce slavery, while the North thought slavery was immoral and unjust while referring to the Constitution for argumentative backup.
The South’s secession was prompted by the events leading to the finalization of their cede. The North had a completely different atmosphere from the South. The North was growing into an industrial community, and was continuing on expanding their industries. The South was having economic troubles in the production of their cotton and tobacco companies because of the North’s economic success. The South wanted to be their own individual government, which would be known as the Confederates. The South wanted to trade with other countries to help with their situation. The United States federal government, wanted to apply taxation to the South’s goods, which would harm their economic growth as a territory. If slavery was abolished, then it would be the end for the Southern economy.
