How Healthy is the Conodoguinet Creek? Member of Enola Community: I have conducted an experiment on whether the Conodoguinet Creek is either polluted or healthy. The Conodoguinet Creek can get polluted by livestock. The livestock could possibly use the creek as a water source or as a restroom. Eutrophication, which is excessive richness of nutrients in any form of body of water, frequently due to runoff from the land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen, is another reason why the creek could be polluted. Fertilizers are used in farming to provide crops with nutrients, but they also play a big role in the Eutrophication process. Phosphate and nitrates are examples of polyatomic ions. Polyatomic ions, also known as molecular ions, are charged chemical species composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded or of a metal complex that can be considered to be acting to a single unit. Phosphates and nitrates are found in fertilizers and some detergents. When rain dissolves these materials make their way into the creeks and rivers. When the surface waters are rich with these materials, they can cause algae to grow, which completes with other organisms for light and other nutrients. This has been a major contributor to the massive loss of life in the Chesapeake Bay waters. The average of phosphate tests were approximately zero and one tenth ppm (parts per million.) The lower the phosphate number, the smaller amount of pollution there is in the water. The average amount of nitrate in the water was approximately zero and nine tenths. The same scenario as the phosphate, the lower the number, the smaller amount of pollution. And the last test I conducted was the dissolved oxygen. The average amount of dissolved oxygen is nine and eight tenths ppm. A certain amount of oxygen is dissolved in bodies of water. I organized four different tests; pH paper, alkalinity tests, the number of rocks neutralizing acid, and the number of rocks that don’t neutralize acid. The average for pH paper was seven. The pH is the numeric scale used to specify the acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution. The pH scale measures acidity and alkalinity. the pH scale goes from zero, which is an acid reading, to fourteen, which is an alkaline reading. A stream with a great abundance of life would probably have a measurement of or near seven, which is near neutral, or the measurement may be a little higher. For a stream that is not as productive, the pH measurement may be higher or lower than seven. For the alkalinity test, the average was thirteen. An alkalinity test tells you if there are limestone, which neutralizes acid.
