In the story, “Conquering Fear”. The author shows the readers that fear becomes smaller once faced by having Miobe climb the mountain and discover that fear is just a toad.

The author first develops the theme by having Miobe go out into the world to meet the villagers. When Miobe first met the villagers they didn't believe that he would be able to conquer fear and that they were doomed and going to be conquered. Miobe set it upon himself to climb the mountain and defeat the monster and overcome the obstacle of fear. As he set off to climb the mountain he realizes that the huge monster is growing smaller and smaller as he gets higher up in the mountain. When he reached the middle of the mountain the monster wasn’t as fierce as everyone claimed it was. He gives voice to that by stating “As he climbed, he looked up, but now the monster seemed to be growing smaller.” “When he was halfway up, he looked up again. When Miobe reached the top of the mountain he bent down and picked the monster up to question it for why it got smaller. The response of the toad was blank. This was stated towards the end of the story “He bent down and picked it up. ‘Who are you?’ But the monster said nothing, and so he cradled it in his hand and walked down the mountain.” When he made it back to the village he showed them that he was able to defeat the monster and defeat fear as a whole. The villagers then praised him for his bravery as stated at the end of the story. “When he reached the village, the people cried, ‘He's safe!’ and they surrounded him. Miobe held out his hand and showed them the tiny wrinkled toad. ‘This is the monster,’ he said. ‘What is your name?’ asked the elder. The creature croaked, and the elder looked up at the crowd and said, ‘Miobe has brought us the monster. Its name is
