The article of confederation was the first form of government in the United States. Although its objective was to construct a strong central government it failed. Shays rebellion demonstrated that the article of confederation gave congress no power to tax or regulates commerce among the states. As well, provided for no common currency and gave each state in congress only one vote regardless of size. As a result, the article confederation demonstrated a weak government. However, on September 17, 1787 the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, gather delegates together to abolish the Articles of Confederation and write what is now known as the Constitution. The word slavery is not mentioned in the clause of the constitution but rather it is implied. Article I, Section 9 explains the issues on importation and taxation of the slave trade. As the clauses states, “The Migration and Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a Tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person”. The phrase "Migration and Importation of such Persons" implies the slave trade. Afterwards, the clause clearly states that the states that exist (which were the thirteen colonies) can allow slavery, however the new colonies cannot. In other words, the clause is giving the option for states to import slaves. Similarly, it is consenting inhumane treatment and if that is not repulsive congress will not prohibit it. This, is another example of the frigid minds of these delegates, but most of all it demonstrates how interest is above humanity. Although, this country holds a proud belief in life liberty and the pursuit of happiness the constitution and it clause contradict it. The grand convention of 1787 was the initiation of slavery because it permitted slavery in the country. The delegates in that convention left clear that their true intention was to have land liberty, life and the pursuit of happiness, but to their own people and not slaves. As George Carlin once said, “Think of how it all started: America was founded by slave owners who informed us, "All men are created equal." All "men," except Indians, niggers, and women. Remember, the founders were a small group of unelected, white, male, land-holding slave owners who also, by the way, suggested their class be the only one allowed to vote. To my mind, that is what's known as being stunningly--and embarrassingly--
