Does control work or is it just a joke? In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare, Egeus wants his daughter to marry Demetrius while Hermia doesn’t want her to marry Demetrius and would instead marry Lysander. In the story there were fairies and the King of fairies Obreon had a plan to make a one sided relationship into a good one. Bottom wants to play every role while everyone knows that isn’t possible. Control isn’t possible because, in the end, it would make them ruin relationships and look foolish. Control isn’t possible because, in the end, it would make them look foolish. This makes Bottom look foolish. Bottom already has a role but he thinks his role doesn’t fit him being a lover and would rather be a fighter. Whenever …show more content…

Egeus ruins relations because he is making his daughter run away with the man she loves because he wouldn’t let her marry him. Lysander asks Hermia to run away with him to his aunt's house so they can get married. Also, Lysander’s aunt doesn’t live in Athens so the rule doesn’t apply to them. “A good persuasion. Therefore, hear me, Hermia:/ I have a widow aunt, a dowager/ Of great revenue, and she hath no child./ From Athens is her house remote seven leagues,/ And she respects me as her only sin./ There, gentle Hermia, may I marry thee;(1.1.158-163). Lysander has an aunt that doesn’t have a child and respects him. Lysander had the idea of going to his aunty and marrying the girls he loves and Hermia said yes. They’re not in Athen so Egues wouldn’t have the choice to pick who she is marrying. Bottom ruins the relationship because Titania was in love with him while Oberon ( The king of fairies) wants her attention. Also, Bottom and Titania loved each other for a period of time. Titania has a spell on her that makes her fall in love with the first beast/person she hears or sees. “On the first view to say, to swear, I love thee”(3.1.144). Titania fell in love with Bottom and she can’t get over him. Also, Titania woke up from her nap and saw Bottom first, and that ruined Oberon's plan. Egues think Demetrius would be the right guy to insure Hermia’s safety and can make sure nothing will happen. He also thinks that Lysander wouldn’t be able to insure her safety and some damage might be done to her. “Be it so she will not be here before your Grace/ Consent to marry her with Demetrius,/ I beg the ancient privilege of Athens:/ As she is mine, I may dispose of her,/ Which shall be either to this gentleman/ or to her death, according to our law” (1.1.40-45). Demetrius got Egeus’s grace and has the chance to marry her. Also, Demetrius should be able to marry if Hermia can’t do anything about it since it was Egeus’s choice. My claim is stronger because Demetrius still can’t be trusted and if he wanted to do something to Hermia he can. Also, if Hermia would have died Egues would have to be blamed since he wanted her to marry him. Hermia doesn’t like Demetrius while he is in love with her, so it’s technically a one sided relationship. Egues will kill Hermia if she doesn’t marry
