Examples Of Control In A Midsummer Night's Dream

355 Words2 Pages
In A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, two lovers forbidden to marry, flee to a forest with mischievous fairies. Also in the forest are tradesmen practicing a play for a wedding. Throughout the play, there are many attempts at control. Shakespeare does not make the case that it is possible to control another person because, in the play, characters cannot control one’s love and characters can’t control their authority figure.
One example proving control is not possible is when a father wants to control who his daughter marries. Edgeus gives Hermia two choices to marry Demetrius or to be a Nun. When Hermia tells Lysander, “In that same place thou hast appointed me, Tomorrow truly will I meet with thee”(Shakespeare 1.1 180-181).
